The Football Association of Thailand has announced the appointment of Anthony Hudson as head coach of the Thai men's national football team.
The Football Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage has announced the appointment of Anthony Hudson as head coach of the Thai men's national football team, with the job to begin immediately.
The Thai national men's football team has a program to compete in a friendly match according to the FIFA Day calendar, meeting Singapore on November 13, 2025, and then continuing with the 2027 Asian Cup qualifying round, Group D, meeting the Sri Lankan national team on November 18, 2025.
For Anthony Hudson, now 44 years old, he started his football career with West Ham United in the Premier League, followed by Luton Town, NEC Nijmegen and Wilmington Hammerhead, before turning to coaching.
He began his coaching career in the United States with Real Maryland Monarchs, followed by Newport County before being appointed to manage the Bahrain U23 and senior national teams, New Zealand U23 and senior teams, before returning to manage the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer, USA, and the United States national team, from youth to senior teams. He then moved to work in Asia again with Al Markhiya, Al Arabi, and most recently with BG Pathum United.
At the press conference, Anthony Hudson said:
"First of all, I'd like to say hello to everyone and thank you for joining me at today's press conference. I'd like to thank Madam Pang, the association president, and the executives for giving me this opportunity. I will do my best to help the Thai national team develop and achieve its goals."
"Let me introduce myself. I entered the football industry through my father, a former Premier League footballer who has influenced my thinking and football development. Regarding my career path, I've had the opportunity to work in various countries around the world, including Bahrain, New Zealand, and Qatar. I've also had numerous opportunities in Thailand."
"I've been fortunate to have the opportunity to work in many countries, but Thailand is a special place. I'm incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to work in this country, where I've met so many wonderful people and learned so much. I'm very happy. Thailand is a special place because of its culture and people. Everyone smiles and respects each other. Everyone has a passion for football and has the potential to go far. I'm excited and can feel everyone's love for the game."
"In my role as technical director, I've asked many questions, analyzed, and received numerous suggestions that have given me much to think about and reflect on. The technical director role varies from place to place. Some focus on the national team, others on youth, and others on women's football. It all comes down to the assignments and the importance placed on each role. My primary responsibility in recent times has been overseeing the overall picture of the U23 youth team. This has been a time for me to learn and study things, both for myself and the football industry. I've also seen things that contribute to the growth and development of Thai football."
"Before moving on to the next topic, I'd like to share some of the developments we've made to further develop Thai football. The first thing I've done is go out into the field and participate in various activities, including youth player selections for the Talent ID project, both men's and women's football, training camps for the national youth team in various previous tournaments, and government football competitions like the Department of Physical Education. This was to understand the origins and background of football, and how it takes to form a national team. This gave me a broader picture. The various points I've discussed here are points that I feel are important for further development beyond the national team. We need to improve the structure as well. The first is a consistent approach for every national team, creating a culture or standards that are the same for every team, so that young athletes can grow along their own path. What I've changed with each generation is the age scale, but also the culture and understanding that allows them to grow along the right path to create consistency. The second is football identity, which I've had the opportunity to talk about. When I spoke, it sparked discussion among fans, and I think it's a topic that's been communicated more widely. For football, the key is that if we don't currently have a large player base, what we can do is make the processes clear and concise. Young players who are starting out in the smallest national teams have a gradual growth process. Each team's role depends on how they play and how they grow. There's no need to make many adjustments. Currently, I see that various national teams may have diverse playing styles. How can we make them similar or follow the same path to facilitate player growth? What I've mentioned is to respect the various national teams. I believe that the head coaches of each national team strive to produce the best possible performance for their teams. The message I want to convey is to prepare the young players for growth, to ensure that selection for the senior national team will be seamless, and to have met the youth national teams before."
"What we're doing this way isn't Anthony Hudson Way. It's a collaborative effort between coaches with expertise and experience in Thai football. We talk, crystallize, and identify the strengths of the Thai national team. We analyze what Thai athletes' strengths are and adopt the appropriate playing style, then incorporate them into each Thai national team. Our recent challenge has been the number of youth competitions. As we all know, many of our young athletes are talented. The question is how to provide them with a continuous development base. As we all know, we must commend and thank Madam Pang, the president of the association. The Coke Cup football tournament will open up more opportunities for youth. Another challenge is scouting and building an athlete database. It might not sound like much, but it's true. We must thank the president of the association for seeing this and investing in this system for the Thai national team to use in the future. Next is the system. Imagine if we have one coach, when there's a change, the analyzed data will be shared with the coach. The next coach will have to start over. But from now on, we will have a system to collect a database of athletes, including foreign athletes or mixed-race athletes, to be included in the association's database. Personally, I want to speak on behalf of all the staff and executives. From working with associations in various countries, what we've done especially here is everyone's hard work. And I really love football and want football to develop like all the fans. It makes me feel that this place is more wonderful than anywhere else."
"(Contract, targets, and staff) The status of the contract is as you know. Everything happened very quickly. I was informed along with everyone. Yesterday, we discussed the status and are still discussing and signing. Regarding the next two games, which are under pressure, I have experienced similar situations before, when I was managing the Bahraini national team and the United States. The situation is similar, requiring a win to advance to the next round. In terms of expectations, I respect both teams we will face, Sri Lanka and Turkmenistan. But I am confident that we can win and advance to the next round as planned. What gives me confidence is the high-level potential of all the athletes, as well as our current situation. Furthermore, if we have the right attitude and are in good form, I am ready to push the team to perform well and stay there. I am confident."
"(Recalling experienced players to the national team) I have faith in and am confident in the youth players. If they have the ability, aggression, and the right thinking, everyone has a chance to play. But if we're talking only about youth and selecting the squad, in addition to youth players, experienced players are just as important and important. It's not just about their performance on the field, but also about setting an example and conduct. This will allow these young players to learn preparation, self-control, and self-care off the field. In addition to youth players, experienced players are also important. National team and club football are different. For example, in away international matches, the difference from the moment they arrive is the culture, lifestyle, and food. This has a significant impact on youth, as they are vulnerable to adaptation, which in turn affects their performance. Therefore, the role of experienced players is to provide advice, maintain standards, and achieve the results we've set for ourselves."
"(The issue of foreign quotas in the Thai League) has been divided into two sides in the past. The first is raising the league and club standards. A clear example is Buriram United, a team that has participated in the AFC Champions League, which has a large number of foreign players. They have seen their level of competition become more comparable to international teams. This is seen as an advantage in raising the level of the club and helping the players in that club to become better. Another technical challenge is developing this aspect. I had experience managing the US national team, which in Major League Soccer was dominated by foreign players in key positions. Technically, we need to find ways to improve the skills of these players to achieve higher standards and be on par with international competition. Another aspect is recruiting mixed-race players with sufficient international potential."
"(The pressure of leading the team to a crucial victory for the future) I would like to share my personal hunger and challenges. I took the job because I truly love Thailand, the culture, and the people. I'm not saying this because there are Thais in the room, but because it makes me feel passionate about the game of football. What I will share is what I've learned as a head coach, that the most important thing about football is the people, the fans, and the players, not just me. My short-term goal is to go to the Asian Cup. The next step is to make the players proud to play for the national team, just as Thai fans are proud. If anything happens along the way, I will do my best. When the day comes that I have to return, I want my goals to come true."
"(Technical coordination) In my role as technical director, I primarily work with the Thai national team, starting with the U23 team and below. I'm honored to be part of this team as well. I've been following the news and comments from fans, and everything has happened so quickly. I've only just taken up the position, so it might be time to discuss our collaboration again."
"(Football fan criticism) I love Thai football fans because the past 24 hours have been full of stories, but it shows that everyone loves Thai football and wants it to perform well, regardless of the trends or fan reactions. I'm someone who cares about fans, and just like the president of the association, I want to show that everyone truly cares about Thai football. Furthermore, I respect all comments from fans. I hope that one day I can help lead the Thai national team into the Asian Cup, making all fans proud of the team's performance and results."
"(Coaching staff) As for the coaching staff, as I said, everything happened very quickly. Regarding the staff, we have some ideas. We'll likely have a Thai coaching team working with us, and we'll recruit the best coaches in Thailand to join us. Another aspect is to allow Thai coaches to learn and help with communication in terms of language and culture. Right now, it's just an idea."
"(Goal on World Cup) If we're talking about the possibility of qualifying for the World Cup, I believe we can. But what we need to do next is what I've explained before, whether it's increasing the number of matches, developing youth, and developing coaches in various areas. These things will help us improve and have a better chance of qualifying for the World Cup. In my opinion, we can."
"I respect and admire Coach Ishii for what he has done and what we need to continue. It would be a huge mistake if I were to change everything, because the team's recent developments have been good and everyone is doing well. My role and character may be different, but I have to gradually impart it to the team, so they can absorb it at every level. We will strive for evolution rather than revolution."
