È arrivata l'ufficialità da parte del club di Gino Pozzo: fatale il 3-0 contro il Norwich

Ègiunta al capolinea l'avventura di Claudio Ranieri sulla panchina del Watford. Il club di proprietà della famiglia Pozzo ha ufficializzato l'esonero dell'ex tecnico della Samp, salutandolo come "uomo di grande integrità e onore", che dunque lascia la Premier League dopo poco più di tre mesi dal suo arrivo. La società è già alla ricerca del sostituto. Fatale la sconfitta per 3-0 contro i rivali del Norwich, ma soprattutto i soli 7 punti conquistati dal giorno del suo arrivo e il penultimo posto in classifica.

Ranieri aveva preso il posto di Xisco Munoz lo scorso 4 ottobre, esordendo due settimane dopo con una pesante sconfitta per 0-5 contro il Liverpool. Successivamente erano arrivate due vittorie prestigiose, quella per 5-2 in trasferta contro l'Everton e, soprattutto, il 4-1 interno rifilato al Manchester United. Da allora però (era il 20 novembre), sono arrivate sette sconfitte in otto partite, un solo punto conquistato, contro il Newcastle, e la squadra è sprofondata, anche a causa della sfortuna, con ben tre match rimandati per Covid.

Il Board degli Hornets riconosce in Claudio un uomo di grande integrità e onore, che sarà sempre rispettato qui a Vicarage Road per i suoi sforzi nel guidare la squadra con dignità. Tuttavia, il Consiglio ritiene che, con quasi la metà del campionato ancora da giocare, un cambiamento nella posizione di Head Coach ora darà al suo sostituto il tempo sufficiente per lavorare con una squadra di talento per raggiungere l'obiettivo immediato di rimanere in Premier League. Non verranno rilasciati ulteriori commenti del club fino a quando questa nuova nomina non sarà confermata".

Italia, i convocati di Mancini per lo stage: c'è Balotelli, sette novità

Oltre a Joao Pedro, prima chiamata in azzurro anche per Carnesecchi, Luiz Felipe, Ricci, Frattesi, Scalvini e Fagioli

Il ct Roberto Mancini ha diramato i nomi dei 35 giocatori che prenderanno parte allo stage di Coverciano del 26-28 gennaio. Come da attese torna a vestire l'azzurro della Nazionale dopo oltre tre anni Mario Balotelli. Nell'elenco ci sono sette novità assolute: il portiere Marco Carnesecchi, i difensori Luiz Felipe e Giorgio Scalvini, i centrocampisti Nicolò Fagioli, Davide Frattesi e Samuele Ricci e l’attaccante Joao Pedro.

Gli azzurri sono dunque pronti a ritrovarsi a due mesi e mezzo di distanza dalla delusione della mancata qualificazione diretta ai Mondiali di Qatar 2022. L'obiettivo è quello di preparare al meglio il delicatissimo playoff di fine marzo contro Macedonia del Nord e, eventualmente, una tra Portogallo e Turchia.

Il raduno è fissato per le ore 12 di mercoledì 26 gennaio presso il Centro Tecnico Federale, con il Ct che alle 13.15 terrà una conferenza stampa, da remoto, per poi dirigere nel pomeriggio la prima delle tre sedute di allenamento in programma, tutte a porte a chiuse.

Nelle prossime ore potrebbero aggiungersi all’elenco i calciatori del gruppo azzurro attualmente infortunati per prendere parte al lavoro tattico propedeutico alle gare di marzo.

Lo Stamford Bridge riaccoglie Conte infliggendogli la prima sconfitta in campionato. Nella 23ª giornata, il Chelsea batte 2-0 il Tottenham del suo ex allenatore grazie alle reti di Ziyech e Thiago Silva e ritrova la vittoria anche in Premier. Il Liverpool vince 3-1 sul campo del Crystal Palace (a segno Van Dijk, Oxlade-Chamberlain e Fabinho) e si porta a -9 dal City. Solo 0-0 per l’Arsenal con il Burnley ultimo, Leicester-Brighton 1-1.

CHELSEA – TOTTENHAM 2-0

Ritorno allo Stamford Bridge indigesto per Antonio Conte. Il tecnico pugliese vede il suo Tottenham crollare 2-0 contro il Chelsea, condotto alla vittoria della Premier nel 2016/17. Partita davvero storta per gli Spurs, messi sotto dal gioco dei campioni d’Europa fin dall’avvio con il colpo di testa di Hudson-Odoi, alto. L’unico guizzo degli ospiti arriva nel finale di primo tempo, ma il gol di Kane viene annullato per fallo su Thiago Silva. Il Chelsea indirizza la partita nella ripresa: dopo appena 2’ il meraviglioso sinistro a giro di Ziyech si infila nel sette, al 10’ Thiago Silva spizza sul secondo palo la punizione di Mount per il 2-0. Bergwijn fallisce il gol che riaprirebbe il match, Lukaku si fa deviare da Lloris il pallone del tris. Gli uomini di Tuchel proteggono il 2-0 e tornano a vincere in Premier dopo quattro giornate, blindando la terza posizione a 10 punti dal City. Il Tottenham resta settimo, a 36, ma tiene la Champions a tiro. Per Conte è la prima sconfitta in campionato.

ARSENAL – BURNLEY 0-0

L’Arsenal non trova la giusta precisione e non riesce a sfondare il muro del Burnley, che lo costringe a uno 0-0 casalingo poco soddisfacente. I Gunners, reduci dall’eliminazione in Carabao Cup, ci provano in diverse occasioni ma peccano nella finalizzazione. Odegaard inventa e colpisce anche una traversa esterna su punizione, Smith Rowe impegna Pope, ma nessuno di loro trova il guizzo decisivo. Nel finale anche a Lacazette manca il colpo della vittoria e l’Arsenal si deve accontentare del pareggio tra le mura amiche: tra campionato e coppe, non vince da cinque partite. Il Burnley resta ultimo in classifica ma si porta a 12 punti e può continuare a sperare nella salvezza.

CRYSTAL PALACE – LIVERPOOL 1-3

Il Liverpool vince 3-1 in trasferta con il Crystal Palace e rosicchia qualche punto al Manchester City, portandosi a 9 lunghezze con una partita da recuperare. I Reds partono forte e sbloccano l’incontro dopo appena 8’, quando Van Dijk svetta sul corner di Robertson e spedisce all’angolino l’1-0. Gli ospiti non rallentano la spinta e raddoppiano poco dopo la mezz’ora con Oxlade-Chamberlain, rapido nel controllare di petto il cross di Robertson e preciso nell’infilare Guaita. Il Crystal Palace non si arrende e chiama Alisson a due interventi decisivi, su Olise e Mateta. L’ex portiere della Roma però non può nulla al 55’ sul contropiede orchestrato da Mateta, scattato sul filo del fuorigioco per servire Edouard, a cui basta appoggiare in rete il pallone dell’1-2. Il Liverpool si difende bene e chiude sul 3-1 all’89’ con il rigore realizzato da Fabinho. Il successo rende più interessante la lotta con il City per il titolo, mentre il Crystal Palace resta fermo a 24 punti.

LEICESTER – BRIGHTON 1-1

Leicester e Brighton non si fanno male nella sfida di metà classifica, pareggiando 1-1. Dopo un primo tempo privo di grosse emozioni, le Foxes passano in vantaggio in avvio di ripresa con Patson Daka, che ribadisce a rete la respinta di Sanchez sul tiro di Barnes. Gli ospiti non ci stano e trovano il pari all’82’ con il colpo di testa di Welbeck su cross di Maupay. Il Brighton, al terzo pareggio consecutivo, resta nono con 30 punti, il Leicester è quattro lunghezze più indietro.
