Gli azzurri sono padroni assoluti del campo e arrivano a sfiorare il 75% di possesso, ma il giro palla del terzetto di centrocampo e qualche fiammata di Berardi e Insigne non bastano a creare pericoli alla porta di Dimitrievski. L'estremo difensore macedone ci prova allora da solo al 30', sbagliando completamente un rinvio e regalando palla a Berardi, che con la porta spalancata spreca calciando debolmente e permettendogli di rimediare al pasticcio. Nell'ultimo quarto d'ora gli uomini di Mancini vanno letteralmente all'assalto del fortino avversario, ma tra tiri murati e qualche imprecisione di troppo non riescono a creare i presupposti per sbloccarla e il primo tempo si chiude sullo 0-0.

Al 63' è ancora Berardi ad avere la clamorosa chance di sbloccarla, ma Aliovski si immola sulla conclusione dell'attaccante del Sassuolo e salva i suoi. Subito dopo Mancini toglie Insigne per far spazio a Raspadori e a un quarto d'ora dalla fine si gioca anche le carte Pellegrini e Tonali, alla disperata ricerca della scintilla in grado di sbloccare una partita sempre più incartata. Negli ultimi minuti tocca infine a Chiellini e all'esordiente Joao Pedro, ma quando sembra tracciata la strada per i supplementari arriva l'incredibile gol macedone: Trajkovski controlla la palla su un lungo lancio, si libera della marcatura morbida di Jorginho e batte da fuori area un Donnarumma tutt'altro che impeccabile. Italia, ci eravamo troppo... illusi: è un disastro annunciato

Dall'Europeo a oggi inseguiti dallo stesso problema del gol. E il futuro è tutto di nuovo da scrivere

Forse ci eravamo solo illusi o, forse, più probabilmente, abbiamo preferito chiudere gli occhi di fronte a problemi che c'erano ieri e ci sono oggi e che, alla fine, ci sono costati il secondo Mondiale consecutivo. Sia chiaro, non c'è paragone tra il percorso fatto da Ventura e quello fatto da Mancini e viene difficile, anche in fondo a questa notte orrenda, gettare la croce su un ct che, comunque, qualche colpa l'ha avuta ma ha dato moltissimo al nostro movimento riportandoci in vetta all'Europa. L'Italia ereditata dopo il disastroso playoff contro la Svezia era una Nazionale finita e da ricostruire e, tutto sommato, da inventarsi. E questo è quel che ha fatto Mancini: ha scelto giocatori che fossero adatti a un palleggio stretto e ha cercato certezze nella tecnica di gruppo non avendo a disposizione un fuoriclasse assoluto. Ha costruito certezze e coltivandole ha motivato un gruppo che si è sentito così forte da arrivare al successo europeo di qualche mese fa.

Proprio in quel trionfo, però, abbiamo preferito avere uno sguardo miope, dimenticando che si era vinto, certo, ma che dopo l'ottimo girone, era stato necessario andare ai rigori per arrivare fino in fondo (contro Spagna e Inghilterra, ndr). Il motivo? Lo stesso di oggi: l'Italia segna poco e segna poco perché davanti gli mancano un centravanti e centimetri. Il che, detto in altre parole, significa che se sblocchi le partite poi magari finiscono in goleada, altrimenti rischi sempre di ingarbugliarti e, alla fine, di perdere come questa sera per un tiraccio da fuori.

Non saremo i migliori del mondo, ma questa non è certamente la nostra dimensione. Russia, ufficiale: la Federcalcio si candida a ospitare Euro 2028 o 2032

Confermata anche la candidatura dell'Italia, che oltre ai russi dovrà vedersela anche con la Turchia

La Russia si candida a ospitare i Campionati Europei di calcio nel 2028 e nel 2032. La Russia sfida invece apertamente l'Italia per quanto riguarda il campionato Europeo del 2032. A febbraio, infatti, la FIGC aveva reso noto di aver presentato alla UEFA, con largo anticipo rispetto alla scadenza del 23 marzo, la volontà di concorrere per l’assegnazione del torneo, competizione ospitata in Italia nel 1968 e nel 1980. Il cronoprogramma della UEFA prevede la presentazione del progetto di candidatura entro il 12 aprile 2023, con la decisione definitiva del Comitato esecutivo nel settembre 2023.
